FAQs About Microdermabrasion

What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion uses crystals in a vacuum system to exfoliate thickened epidermis revealing healthier skin. Microdermabrasion is safe for all skin types and colors and is most often requested by clients looking to reduce the appearance of aging.

Microdermabrasion is generally used to:

  • Polish and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Improve the appearance of dull, oily or leathery skin texture.
  • Minimize the appearance of large pores.
  • Exfoliate and suction clogged pores.
  • Improve the appearance of mild acne scarring.
  • Even out mild pigment irregularities.
  • Enhance penetration of therapeutic skincare products.
  • Minimize blemishes.
  • Minimize white and black heads.

How many treatments do I need?

Some results are achieved with a single treatment. More significant results are achieved with a series of five to six treatments repeated one to three weeks apart with monthly maintenance treatments recommended. The optimum number of treatments depends on the type of skin and your professional aesthetician will suggest a treatment plan.

Does microdermabrasion have side effects?

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive treatment for the outer layer of skin. Clients report virtually no discomfort, down time or recovery.  Skin may appear red for an hour or two after the procedure. Some clients compare the feeling of tightness and redness to the feeling of a mild sunburn. Your aesthetician will recommend a daily regimen of skincare products to restore moisture and balance.

What are the most common areas treated with microdermabrasion?

Clients most commonly choose microdermabrasion treatments for the face, neck, chest and hands.

Who can perform microdermabrasion?

Schenden’s Spas aestheticians are specially trained to perform microdermabrasion.  Michael J. Schenden, M.D., Chief of Plastic Surgery at William Beaumont Hospital in Troy, oversees all Schenden’s Spas medical spa services.

How long does a microdermabrasion last?

A typical microdermabrasion treatment for the face is 20-30 minutes.

How much does microdermabrasion cost?

Schenden’s Spas offers facial treatments for $80 with no hidden costs.  Skincare products will be recommended but purchase is not required.

What can’t Microdermabrasion do?

Microdermabrasion cannot remove severe scarring or deeply spotted areas. Darkly pigmented areas or tattoos will not disappear.

FAQs About Facial Peels

What skin conditions can a facial peel improve?

Facial peels are typically performed on the face, neck, chest and hands. They can also be performed on the arms and legs. Peels are used to improve a wide variety of skin conditions including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Shallow acne scars
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Age spots
  • Freckling

What is facial peel skin rejuvenation?

Facial peels are used to create an even and controlled shedding of damaged skin cells. This helps to restore skin to a more youthful appearance. There are various types of facial peels; your Schenden’s Spa aesthetician will explain what type of peel is best for you. Depending on your skin type and the desired results, a Glycolic, Salicylic or Jessner may be recommended. Solutions are applied to the skin to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the production of new skin cells. Facial peels tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; however, they have limits to what they can do. They are not a substitute for a facelift since peels cannot eliminate excessive or lax skin.

How long does it take to have a facial peel?

About thirty minutes in total, it has often been referred to as "the lunch time peel".

Is a facial peel painful?

No. There is a mild degree of "tingling" or a slightly itchy sensation. Upon neutralizing the peel, the skin feels fresh and smooth without discomfort.

How many facial peels should I have and how often is it recommended?

Many individuals find that a peel performed every four to six weeks gives optimal results. Glycolic peels complement the regular use of other products that can be used on a regular basis at home. The short term exposure of a higher concentration of a facial peel on a periodic basis helps maintain skin health and appearance.

Will a facial peel remove deep lines or wrinkles?

Peels will not remove deep lines. Medical Laser resurfacing is recommended where wrinkles are advanced. However, a peel will often improve the tone, texture, smoothness and appearance of skin.
